CSA Share Week #10

Posted 8/15/2019 12:44pm by Aaron Lichtenberg.

Hello Farm Faithful,

We started our week with a quick Flower Pop-Up Shop at Wayfarer Coffee Roasters on Monday to benefit Got Lunch! Laconia. As some of you may already know, we have been working with Got Lunch! for 5 years running, by organizing a local vegetable component to the program, and we wanted to find a way to be able to use our flowers to help as well. We are excited to share that with the help of Happy Cow Ice Cream in Laconia, who offered a full-donation match, and Homeward Bound Professional Animal Care who added in an additional cash donation, we will be writing a check to Got Lunch! Laconia for $738!

This week, we put our final planting of napa cabbage, Asian greens and pac choi in the ground. There are still a few transplants left to go out into the fields, but for the most part, we are left to seeding for fall/winter crops (yikes!) and high tunnel plantings - a true sign that the season is a'changin' (I'm sure some have noticed a few trees turning already!).

Our big harvest for the week included onions, amongst a sea of weeds & grass, but hidden in there was just what we have been waiting for since we seeded them way back in late February and planted out in the field early May.

The first major harvest of lisianthus came out of the high tunnel this week, with deep blue, purple, green, rose, and apricot making their gorgeous debut!

If you are up for a tasty treat of your own, we highly recommend the Japanese Cucumber Salad from the recipe bank. Use this with some Korean Beef Lettuce Wraps and you won't be disappointed! The link to this recipe you will find on our website (it is an oldie, but a goodie).

And while I am thinking of it, how about some tacos from the other side of the world - here is a link on how we like to make Carnitas (again on our website). With tomatoes, jalapenos, and cilantro in season, how can you not make tacos! You can also find our recipe for homemade flour tortillas here.
